Escapist behaviours have three main things in common:
1. All of these behaviours, at the outset, make a person feel ‘better’. They feel better because for at least a time they can forget about their emotional pain. A few too many drinks blot out heartache. A binge on junk food eases emotional hurt. Reckless behaviour feels exciting – the antithesis of painful feelings.
2. These behaviours always eventually make matters worse! You might be able to get away with some excessive drinking, a few inappropriate sexual flings, or a handful of episodes of destructive behaviour in a relationship, but the escapism doesn’t last. Ultimately things become more complicated, more painful, and harder to solve.
3. Finally, all escapist behaviours change the way you feel. They alter your brain chemistry, giving you sensations that you find irresistible and/or compelling. These sensations can become addictive. However, Happy Human isn’t a book about addiction, so I’m not going into this important subject in more detail. I urge you to seek proper help if any of your escapist behaviours have tipped over into an addiction or are heading that way.
